Stay on track in 2020–leave last year’s habits behind

One week into January and you have everything to make your goals become a reality. As time passes, you start to forgive yourself for missing one or two days. Soon a month goes by and you’ve forgotten or lost interest in the firm decisions you made for this year. It’s curious as to whether we really want to change in the first place or if we have a difficult time committing to those changes. I’m a firm believer that it’s the latter. With guidance, I think it’s possible to make commitments a reality.

Words are powerful

Track your goals in a notebook. Using a journal to track yourself is a great way to record your progress. As time goes on you can compare previous results to your current ones to see what you have achieved or what you need to focus on the coming week. You can find journals that are goal-oriented online but normal spiral notebooks work too. Get as creative as you like!

Stick to it

Stick notes to everything. Write motivational quotes, memos to yourself, miniature drawings, whatever will remind you of your goal. Then plaster your mirror, your fridge, your car dashboard, or even your hangers, so you can see these little memos daily. A memo a day keeps the bad thoughts away.

Plan it out

A planner allows you to schedule your resolution into your current lifestyle. They make it easier to commit to a time frame or a deadline rather than trying to spontaneously figure out when you’re going to achieve your goals. So make yourself a plan to stay on task at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t need it for the entire year, it’s a handy tool to start with when making large or small changes.

Picture it

Picture this: you’ve reached the end of 2020 and you’ve achieved your resolutions. You feel better than you did in the beginning of the year. Now take that picture and turn it into something tangible. If it’s weight-loss use pictures of body types you want your own body to reflect. If it’s a career opportunity, have an image of yourself doing the job you want. If it’s flossing your teeth every night, place pictures of floss on your mirror. The point of using pictures is to keep your resolutions alive and when you visualize them they start to be part of your routine.

Which tactic are you going to try to make your dreams come true? Let us know in the comments what you’re doing this year to make sure you reach your goals.
